Why You Should Visit Sarajevo

If you read my review of Intrepid Travel you know that I did zero research before jetting off to the Balkans. Though this isn’t my usual, I really loved it because I had no expectations. If you’re headed to Paris, odds are good you are picturing yourself gazing out across the city atop the Eiffel Tower, and imagining how wonderful of the crepes will taste. The risk you run with this is disappointment, so really I was setting myself up perfectly for this trip (the lazy man’s excuse). No expectations = no disappointment! Like many people, when I think of Bosnia the first thing that comes to…

Choosing a Tour Company: Intrepid Travel Review

This summer I did something I haven’t done in quite a few years. Instead of being the usual googling and research guru I pride myself in being, I decided to be lazy for my trip to the Balkans, and join up with a group tour where all of the logistics and details were taken care of.Though the lazy side of me was excited, the side of me that is accustomed to researching every detail and creating an itinerary that suits my whims was nervous. This was my first trip with Intrepid Travel, a tour company I first heard of through Nomadic Matt, and I…

She needs to sort out her priorities…

venice

As Ron Weasley once said, it’s all about priorities.   “Wow! You’re so lucky.” It’s not that it’s meant to be insulting, but it ends up feeling that way. If I run into someone who has followed a trip I recently took, I’ll often get a chorus of “you’re so lucky”. If I’d won the trip I would agree, but luck insinuates that I don’t have to pay, work for, plan, etc. With a standard office job I don’t have a plethora of paid vacation days. Travel doesn’t fit easily into my work life. I don’t find myself sitting around with…

Flying Budget Across the Atlantic

WOW air

For years European airlines like Ryanair have been teasing budget flights from the US to Europe, and while we like their enthusiasm, the continual tease is exhausting. We’ve seen “big announcements” that you’ll soon be crossing the ocean for $10 and we’ll all stop being oppressed by the ridiculous costs of flying. But it never happens. We can travel hack all day, but budget flights to Europe just haven’t really existed. We’re not used to budget flying here in the States. Unless you’re lucky enough to log in during a glitch in the system and the airlines are forced to honor…

What’s Coming: Peru

Today marks exactly 1 week until I head off to Peru and visit South America for the first time. It’s just been in the past few days that I’ve realized how little I know about Peru, and how much more I should have been preparing. My travels over the summer took me to a new country, but essentially the majority of the trip was to places I knew quite well, having visited Ireland a few times previously, and spending part of 2011 teaching English in Madrid. Below I’ll outline my itinerary for 1 week in Peru! With our essentials booked…

European Road Trip…Part 4

Venice, Italy

To catch up check out Part 1, Part2, & Part 3 Our lengthy delay in Genoa meant our arrival in Venice was much later than anticipated. We’d hoped to scope out a decent place to stay, but arriving in the dark makes that harder. After the four-hour drive we were pretty spent from the driving and the robust singing. We decided to just camp out in the car, but not without first setting off several traffic violation lights, and driving through some abandoned train shipping yards. We’re subtle. The next day we drove closer to downtown Venice, and were lucky…

Natural Motion Sickness Remedies

Natural Motion Sickness Remedies for Travelers Motion sickness sucks, especially if you like to travel, and I think my motion sickness has grown stronger over time. Recent event #1 to support this: Having to leave and sit down while Laine and I were cleaning out the fish tank at work due to the excessive sloshing sounds. I felt moderately sea sick from the tiny sea represented in the fish tank. Ugh. Recent event #2: Someone at work was rocking in their chair and I had to ask them to stop due to feeling like death. This also reminded me of the…
